21st Annual December 25th Day of Service

Sorry that it has been awhile, all. I received this message from the Washington DC JCC looking for volunteers to plan their 21st Annual December 25th Day of Service. Even if you aren't in town the day of the event, consider helping with the pre-planning!

1. SITE AND TEAM CAPTAIN COORDINATOR NEEDED
The December 25th Day of Service is the largest interfaith volunteer event in the Metropolitan area. Help make it happen!

The MCCCS is actively seeking a Site and Team Captain Coordinator for the 21st Annual December 25th Day of Service. The job is part-time with flexible hours and includes:

A. Identifying 60+ social service agencies in the DC Metro area to hold volunteer activities for Christmas Day.
B. Recruiting and training team captains whose job is to lead clusters of volunteers to these project sites and overseeing the project.
Start Date: September 1, 2007 End Date: January 15, 2008

For complete job description or to apply, please submit cover letter and resume to laviniab@washingtondcjcc.org. or call (202) 777-3246. The application deadline for this position is COB August 15, 2007.

2.COMMITTEE MEMBERS NEEDED FOR DECEMBER 25TH DAY OF SERVICE
Share your skills for a great cause. Join the planning committee and impact the lives of those less fortunate than you. Full training will be provided. Help with:

GIFT DRIVES
On December 25th we distribute thousands of much needed items to DC's homeless shelters. Hats, gloves, socks and scarves are the most requested items by those living in shelters. Help keep them warm on cold days! Here's what you can do: contact local groups/organizations to host gift drives, recruit people to do drives at their offices and keep track of who’s doing drives and where. We will provide you with neatly wrapped boxes and help you with drop-off and pick-up once they are full.

DONATIONS
The December 25th Day of Service relies on members of our community, businesses and individuals, for donations of in-kind items that will be delivered as presents by our 1,200 volunteers on December 25th. Small items of clothing (see above) and toiletries (shampoo, soap, lotion, toothpaste and shower gel) are sorely needed. Every year, dedicated volunteers make miracles happen by joining this lively committee in securing these gifts for those in need. Every little bit helps! Tell your friends, family and neighbors!

GIFT-WRAPPING
Two weeks before December 25th, the Washington DCJCC becomes the gift wrapping station for more than 60 social service sites visited on the project day. Help sort donated items, organize gift-wrapping events and recruit gift wrappers. This aspect of the December 25th Day of Service project is very important as each year we need to make sure all our recipient shelters receive appropriate gifts.

DATABASE, WEBSITE NEEDS
Caling all techies and creative writers! If you have database management skills, have a love for technology and web applications, or enjoy web design, you can help by maintaining the website & event database. More than 100 individual online events/projects will be created so that volunteers can register and help out on the day of the event and prior. Join us in making sure the volunteers' online experience is seamless and user-friendly.

LOGISTICS
Coordinate the Washington DCJCC building set-up & break down for December 25th. Recruit volunteers to assist with set-up, create posters and signs guiding volunteers around the building. Devise and execute plan for assisting lost volunteers on the day of the event in the building, post guides on each floor, assist with overall project list board placed in Q street lobby, the meeting place for 1,000+ volunteers on the event day. Supervise Washington DCJCC set-up over week prior to D25th to be complete the evening of December 24th.

VOLUNTEER PARTY (2:00-5:00PM)
Are you a great party host? Know people who enjoy throwing the coolest parties? This volunteer assignment is for you! Share your love of bringing people together to celebrate our volunteers' efforts. Each year, the Washington DCJCC throws a party to celebrate the success of the day and celebrate our volunteers. Help us plan the celebration. If you know great local bands, invite them to play for our volunteers. Everyone loves live music!

MEDIA RELATIONS
Publicity is essential for the success of this great community service event. Help publicizing it! Assist us in devising a great media strategy to get the word out. Create a timeline and work with media relations interns to place ads, PSAs, calendar notices in local media outlets, and send out press packets as requested.

PHONE BANK & EMAIL
Because of the large scale of this event, email and phone inquiries come in high volume in the months of November and December. Help us to make sure everyone gets their questions answered by responding to email and phone inquiries of those interested to give their service to the community.

CLOTHING DRIVE (day-of-event volunteer opportunity)
In addition to the gift drives and donations campaigns, the Washington DCJCC organizes a clothing drive on December 25th. Volunteers will drop off donations of used clothes from 7:00am-12:00pm. These items will be placed in plastic bags, labeled and donated to homeless shelters. Help us by sorting the clothes and securing a truck for transportation to shelters.

To join the committee, please email laviniab@washingtondcjcc.org or call 202-777-3246. The Committee will meet once a month from August - October and twice a month in the months of November and December. Help make big things happen!

Any other events coming up that need volunteers? I'd love to see more posts!
